Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free tool that allows your business to manage how it appears in Google Search results and Google Maps. It displays your gym's address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, and star rating when potential members search locally.
Why GBP matters for fitness and wellness businesses
Your GBP is often the first impression potential members have of your local business, whether that's a gym, studio, or longevity clinic. When someone searches "CrossFit near me" or "wellness clinic in [city]," Google displays the Local 3-Pack: the top three businesses that appear with map pins. Being in that top three means potentially getting 93% more calls and clicks.
Without a claimed and optimised GBP, you won't show up on Google Maps, can't collect reviews that influence rankings, and searchers won't see your contact information without visiting your website first.
A prospective member searches for "gym in Bristol." The first thing they see isn't a website but a map option showing star ratings, opening hours, and photos. Even if your SEO isn't dialled in, your GBP can still rank in the top 3 positions.
How to maintain an effective GBP
Claiming your profile is just the starting point. An optimised GBP requires ongoing maintenance across a handful of high-impact areas:
- Keep your NAP consistent. Your Name, Address, and Phone number should be identical across your GBP, website, and any other directory listings.
- Add high-quality photos of your facility and classes. Listings with photos receive significantly more direction requests and website clicks.
- Respond to all reviews, positive and negative. Review responses signal to Google that the listing is actively managed, and to prospective members that you care about the experience.
- Choose the most specific business category available. For example, use "CrossFit Gym" or "Yoga Studio" instead of the generic "Gym." This specificity helps Google match your listing to the right searches.
- Post regular updates about schedules, promotions, or events. GBP posts keep your listing fresh and give searchers a reason to engage before they even visit your site.
