Search Volume
Search volume is the number of times people search for a specific keyword within a given time period, usually measured monthly. It tells you how many potential visitors could reach your site if you rank for that term.
Why does search volume matter for fitness businesses?
Search volume reveals opportunity. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches represents significantly more potential traffic than one with 500 searches, helping you prioritise which content to create first.
High search volume doesn't guarantee value. A keyword with 100,000 monthly searches but low commercial intent brings traffic that doesn't convert. A keyword with 2,000 monthly searches of people actively looking to buy a fitness app might drive more revenue.
Understanding search volume helps you balance quick wins with long-term plays. Low-volume, low-difficulty keywords rank faster but bring fewer visitors. High-volume keywords take longer to rank for but deliver bigger payoffs once you do.
What does search volume look like in practice?
A gym management platform analyses two keywords. "Gym software" has 22,000 monthly searches but high competition. "Best gym CRM for franchises" has 1,200 monthly searches but lower difficulty. They target the second keyword first because ranking takes 2-3 months instead of 12, and the 1,200 qualified searchers convert better than generic "gym software" traffic.
How is search volume calculated?
SEO tools like Google Ads Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, and SEMrush estimate search volume based on aggregated search data. These are estimates, not exact counts.
Google doesn't publish exact search volume numbers, so tools use different methodologies, creating slight variations between platforms. A keyword might show 5,000 searches on one tool and 6,200 on another.
Search volume fluctuates seasonally. Fitness keywords spike in January and September when people start fitness routines, while summer months show lower search volume.
How do you use search volume strategically?
To use search volume strategically:
- Use low-volume keywords early to build authority quickly, then target progressively harder keywords as your domain strength grows
- Prioritise keywords with commercial or transactional intent over high-volume informational searches that don't convert
- Account for seasonality when planning content around fitness keywords, ramping up in November and December for January New Year traffic
- Compare search volume across variations to find underutilised keywords competitors haven't targeted yet
- Track actual traffic from ranked keywords to validate whether estimated search volume matches real visitor numbers
- Monitor search volume trends over time, as keywords can rise or fall in popularity as fitness trends evolve
