Impressions vs. Clicks vs. CTR

Definition

Impressions are the number of times your web page (article, landing page, etc.) is shown in Google's search results page.

Clicks are the number of times someone actually clicks on your page.

CTR, or click-through rate, is the percentage of impressions that turn into clicks.

Formula CTR = [Clicks ÷ Impressions]%

Why the difference is important for fitness brands?

All stats are important for your website's visibility, but how they interact with each other also matters. You may get high impressions but low clicks and CTR, which shows that, even though you're gaining visibility, it's not converting to traffic.

Low clicks
Visible, not compelling
People are seeing you and moving on
Clicks strong
Positioning works
Your positioning is doing its job
CTR strong
Message lands
Your message is landing with the people you actually want

Reasons for high impressions but low clicks and CTR

If your brand is getting high impressions on your Google Search Console (GSC) but low clicks, the following could be responsible:

  • Your rankings are in positions 6–10. Impressions rack up but CTR at those positions is naturally very low
  • Title and meta description aren't compelling enough to earn the click over competitors
  • Search intent mismatch. Users can tell from the snippet your page isn't what they need
  • Rich results (featured snippets, PAA boxes, ads) are absorbing clicks before they reach you
  • Competitor results have stronger trust signals: Reviews, recognisable brand, better structured data
Questions to ask your agency

"How's our website's organic CTR vs. industry standard? What pages have a concerningly low number and what can we do to get them more clicks?"
